Nestled in the shadows of historic Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny Design Craft Centre shares the buildings, which were once the Castle’s stables and coach houses with the Crafts Council of Ireland, the country’s design and economic development organisation for Irish craft and design.
The National Craft Gallery, one of Ireland’s most exciting artistic venues is also a neighbour. The Crafts Council of Ireland’s flagship exhibition space, the Gallery is an inspirational outlet where craftspeople can develop new and innovative designs and have them showcased in a year-round exhibitions programme. Talented makers and imaginative curators are responsible for its critically acclaimed Exhibitions Programme, which has included textiles, glass, ceramics, jewellery, furniture, baskets, and attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year.
The National Craft Gallery is open:
January - March, Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 6.00pm
April - December, Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 6.00pm and Sundays from 11.00am to 6.00pm. Admission is free.
The Castle Yard Complex is also home to a number of independent workshops for some of Ireland’s most talented and innovative artists and designers. Visitors can frequently view the artists at work - a unique and hugely rewarding experience.
